Chess Pieces (1943)
Composed by: John CageCourtesy of C.F. Peters and The John Cage Trust.
Performed and arranged by Ian Miguel from the score deciphered and transcribed by Margaret Leng Tan. For the four ‘Cage’ inputs to Reunion, four of the twenty two systems of Chess Pieces were chosen, somewhat arbitrarily: Systems 1, 3, 4, and 5. Each was played very slowly: 12 beats per minute for Systems 1 and 5, 6 beats per minute for Systems 3 and 4. Different instrumentation was chosen for each system, using a mixture of analogue and digital synthesizers. Synthetic piano and handbell sounds were created on a Yamaha SY85 for Systems 1 and 3 respectively. A Sequential Circuits Prophet T8 was used for System 4, and an E-mu Ultra Proteus for System 5. All were recorded through a Metric Halo ULN-2 and mixed in Apple Logic 9. For all four systems a Bricasti M7 was used provide a common reverberant space.
