This work was used for the choreographed piece by Merce Cunningham entitled Effusion avant l'heur (later Games; also Trio), premiered in the summer of 1949. It is a suite of three pieces, each quite distinct, the middle one dance-like. Overall, it is quite simple, as is the preparation of the piano. Cage wrote this piece just prior to his separation from his wife Xenia, hence, perhaps, the title.
