Comments For this work, the orchestra is divided into 3 'groups', each producing a different kind of music. The strings, along with the clarinets and flutes, play sustained tones, quietly and full of imperfections. The brass and double-reed instruments interrupt twice with a blast of sound, once at the beginning of the piece and once nearer the end. The percussion instruments, some of them quite exotic, play notes that are scattered over the duration of the work. 1O1 should be performed without conductor, although a conductor could well serve as a rehearsal coach. The work was composed using flexible time-brackets, and consists only of parts (no overall score). Note that the title of this work is 1O1, i.e. the number one, followed by capital (letter) O, followed by the number one (not 101, i.e. one zero one). |
