Comments This is the first of Cage’s work to use time-brackets, a notational system Cage employed in virtually all of his late works and especially his “number pieces” and his “Music for ___” series. The compositional method was derived from the same method Cage used in the making of his series of etchings entitled On the Surface at Crown Point Press, at the time in Oakland, California. All five orchestras are to be conducted by separate conductors and are placed well apart from one another. Each piece lasts up to 75 seconds. This work was composed at the request of the organizers of the New Music Festival in Metz, France. |
